1. FIND THE POSITIVE IN A NEGATIVE SITUATION
We are constantly surrounded by negativity. Whether it’s a lazy coworker whose work you need to clean up or a sickness in your family, find one positive in the situation, no matter how bad your personal situation is. Positive thinking will not only allow you to be happy in life, but will give you the strength you need to endure those tough times. Sometimes, asking questions will make positive thinking easier:
What is a positive learning experience I could take away from this negative situation?
Is there an opportunity for growth or development in this negative situation?
2. EXERCISE REGULARLY
It is incredible what exercise does for your mind and body. Physical activity helps increase the production of your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, endorphins. This helps reduce stress and help your overall well-being. Exercise controls weight, combats disease, improves mood, and boosts energy.
There have been multiple times where I go to the gym in a bad mood. When I’m walking out of the doors after my lift, I always say how glad I am that I went because I’m in such a better mood. (Jacob can vouch for this one.)
3. LEARN TO TAKE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK + TURN IT INTO HEALTHY CRITICISM
If you get negative feedback or an answer that is opposite of what you want to hear, don’t reply right away. Sleep on it. This is my best advice, and one that I need to constantly remind myself. After you’ve slept on it, reflect on what the person said, and how you can positively respond. If it has to do with something you did incorrectly, take it as a learning experience and move on.
A good example of this would be getting a declination email stating that you did not get the job that you applied for. Take it as a learning experience. Now, you got one more job interview under your belt, and you’re more comfortable with interviewing than you were before. Maybe you know where you could improve in that interview process. Always take the positives away and move on!
As Albert Einstein said, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”
4. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
This may be the easiest and quickest way to become more positive. Be grateful that you have a loving partner, successful career, healthy family, etc. All of these will instantly turn your thought process around to be more positive. Counting your blessings will make you realize how luck you truly are.
Whenever I am down about a certain subject, I think how lucky I am to have a caring husband. Lots of people don’t have a husband as kind, loving, and faithful as mine. And that will always be something I am completely and genuinely grateful for. I promise, thinking about this will completely change your perspective.
Finally, smile!!! Smiling is a simple way to “trick” your body into being in a better mood. According to Dr. Gupta, a neurologist, smiling spurs a chemical reaction in your brain, which then secretes dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine increases our feeling of happiness. It’s been shown that low levels of dopamine and serotonin are associated with depression and anxiety. In other words, smiling can trick your brain into thinking you’re happy, which then creates the actual emotion of happiness. Smiling can absolutely change the way that you think and feel!
